The fundamental questions of UniSysCat are directed towards the future of chemistry: with which catalytic processes and industrial process architectures is a post-fossil world possible?
The basis for any future solution is systemic insight into the present and the past. In this case: how did modernity get caught in such a complex, ecological and political stranglehold by coal, oil and gas? What binds us to this epoch of petromodernity, for better or worse? In technology and science, in everyday life, art and culture? As societies and individuals?
Dr. Benjamin Steininger (postdoc at UniSysCat) and Dr. Alexander Klose have been working on the cultural theory of petromodernity and its overcoming for years as historians and curators. Now director Mathias Frick has made a film with the two for ZDF/ARTE: "Petro-Melancholie. Das Erdölzeitalter im Spiegel der Kunst" ("Petro-Melancholia. Die Grundfragen von UniSysCat richten sich auf die Zukunft der Chemie: Mit welchen katalytischen Prozessen und industriellen Prozessarchitekturen ist eine postfossile Welt möglich?
Grundlage für jede künftige Lösung ist die systemische Einsicht in Gegenwart und Vergangenheit: Wie konnte die Moderne in einen so komplexen, ökologischen und politischen Würgegriff durch Kohle, Öl und Gas hineingeraten? Was bindet uns im Schlechten, wie im Guten an diese Petromoderne? In Technik und Wissenschaft, in Alltag, Kunst und Kultur? Als Gesellschaften und Individuen?
Dr. Benjamin Steininger (Postdoc am UniSysCat) und Dr. Alexander Klose forschen seit Jahren als Historiker und Kuratoren zur Kulturtheorie der Petromoderne und ihrer Überwindung.
