MitWissenschaft is a lecture series at the Humboldtforum: Berlin's clusters of excellence present themselves and their research in the form of a stage show under the motto "Scientists share their cutting-edge research with the audience". On Monday, 28 February 2022, 7 pm, it will be the turn of UniSysCat.
You want to know what UniSysCat is all about? An evening full of catalysis research is waitung for you! 90 % of all the products we use every day are made with catalytic processes. But catalysis is not a human invention! Nature is the real master of acceleration. One example is photosynthesis in plants. In the MitWissenschaft series, researchers from a wide range of scientific disciplines discuss how we can revolutionize chemistry and learn from nature.
The science slam by Victor Nicolaus, loaded with experiments, will provide a brilliantly entertaining start. Afterwards, the two cluster speakers Arne Thomas and Holger Dobbek will discuss the challenges of catalysis research from the perspective of chemistry and biology. The focus will be on the question: Can we learn from nature? UniSysCat scientist Maria Andrea Mroginski then takes the audience on a journey through research: from one laboratory to the next and into the depths of computer simulation. Finally, cluster speaker Matthias Drieß paints the picture of his vision of the future: scientific utopia as an inspiring building block in chemistry. The event will be rounded off by questions from the audience. The moderator Volker Wieprecht will accompany the audience through the evening.

Von der Natur lernen: Der Exzellenzcluster Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat) will die Erforschung von fundamentalen Vorgängen in der Chemie revolutionieren – die Katalyse.
Was ist Katalyse? Kurz gesagt: ein Prozess, der chemische Reaktionen beschleunigt. Dazu braucht es einen Heiratsvermittler, den Katalysator. Katalyse begegnet uns überall: 90% aller Produkte, die wir täglich verwenden, werden mit katalytischen Verfahren hergestellt. Doch die Katalyse hat nicht der Mensch erfunden! Die Natur ist die eigentliche Meisterin der Beschleunigung. Ein Beispiel ist die Photosynthese von Pflanzen. Es ist faszinierend, wie gut riesige Moleküle in den Zellen, genannt Enzyme, hierbei aufeinander abgestimmt sind und die Katalysatoren wie in einem Profiteam zusammenspielen. Wer das Zusammenspiel versteht, revolutioniert die Katalyseforschung. Das ist das Ziel von UniSysCat.
Forschende aus verschiedensten naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen beleuchten die Katalyse aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Wie in einem Puzzle soll das Zusammenfügen aller ihrer Erkenntnisse ein ganzheitliches Bild ergeben. Das System erforschen. Das System verstehen. Das System nachahmen und dadurch neue Systeme entstehen lassen. So will UniSysCat den Weg zu einer nachhaltigen Chemie nach dem Beispiel der Natur ebnen.
