Many of the global challenges require solutions based on chemical innovations, from CO2 sequestration to water treatment and energy storage to waste prevention and recycling. Out of this context, the idea of GreenCHEM arose: a project to establish an ecosystem for transfer in the field of green chemistry. For GreenCHEM the five initial partners (TU Berlin, FU Berlin, HU Berlin, BERLIN-CHEMIE AG and Covestro AG) together with another 24 project partners will receive funding of up to 10 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). A total of 115 alliances had applied for the funding programme "T!Raum - TransferRäume für die Zukunft von Regionen" (T! Space - Transfer Spaces for the Future of Regions). Twelve initiatives, inter alia GreenCHEM, have now been awarded federal funding for a maximum period of nine years. The "chemical turnaround" summarises efforts to create a circular economy based on renewable raw materials that avoids the use of fossil and toxic substances. However, this enormous transformation of Germany's third-largest industry does not only require technical research results aligned along the twelve principles of green chemistry. The key to success is to significantly increase transfer successes in this area. Berlin is known worldwide for cutting-edge research in chemistry, and GreenCHEM will facilitate the transfer of research results into practical applications and thus makes a decisive contribution to a materially sustainable future," says Prof. Dr. Rainer Haag from the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the FU Berlin about the mission of GreenCHEM, which is supported by all 29 participating partners: "Developing the sustainability impact of green chemistry through transfer. The aim is to develop innovative transfer formats and to establish an ecosystem with European appeal that is financially self-supporting.
The fact that the Berlin region is a top location for outstanding basic research in chemistry is proven by numerous Berlin collaborative research projects as well as the only Cluster of Excellence in the field of chemistry that has existed continuously since the beginning of the Excellence Initiative (2007-2018 UniCat, currently UniSysCat). However, transfer successes have so far fallen well short of the existing potential. With GreenCHEM, the participating p.artners want to combine existing infrastructure and know-how so that sustainable innovations from the first experiment to industrial production, from the idea to implementation, are made possible more quickly and more often.
